Welcome to the Kearney High School Trapshooting Team Home Page

5/20/2009

The year is complete for the practices. We have one, possibly two, shoots left to participate in. The team will be competing in the State AIM program at the Missouri Trapshooters Association on June 20th. Depending on their performance we could go on to participate in the National Championships again this year. The final averages for the spring program is posted on the scores page. Thanks again to all those students that participated in the Spring program.

We have the 2nd Annual Trapshooting Banquet/Fundraising Shoot scheduled at the KCTA for June 11th. This is open to the public so if you want to come out and shoot just send me an email or give me a call. Contact information is at the bottom of the web page. Here is a copy of the shoot program. It is in PDF file format.

Also, I need to extend congratulations to Kevin Vanderherdin. Kevin won the 20 gauge shotgun that the team was raffling off. Thanks to everyone that participated in the raffle and to help sell tickets. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Smith & Wesson for donating the shotgun to us.

OLD NEWS

5/2/2009

Lots to report on!

First the team competed at the Missouri Trapshooters Association 4/25/2009 at the Missouri State High School Trapshooting Championships. We took 8 shooters to the event total.

Team 1 448/500 (89.6%)

John Newsome 98/100

Cindy Curtin 93/100

Aaron Sommer 93/100

Eric Meier 89/100

Taylor Couchman 75/100

 Team 2 228/300 (76%)

Cody Bush 87/100

Derrick Bonner 74/100

Jesse Jepsen 67/100

It seems as if the competition gets tougher every year at this shoot. Team 1 placed 8th in the state out of 23 teams in their class. Good shooting!

Individually we had two shooters with great showings, unfortunately they fell short of trophies. John Newsome broke a 98 and tied for third in Senior class. He had to shoot off against two other shooters and dropped one two many targets in the shoot-off. Cindy Curtin tied for fifth in the Lady category.

Team 1 competed at the KCTA this Saturday in the ATA (Amateur Trapshooting Association) AIM (Academics-Integrity-Marksmanship) Youth Shoot. The team broke a respectful 440/500 (88%) as a squad. John Newsome broke a 99/100 and tied for the high Junior individual trophy. The team probably will go on to compete at the state level in June at the MTA again in the State AIM competition. I will find out more later in the week.

Here is how their scores broke out:

John Newsome 99/100

Aaron Sommer 94/100

Eric Meier 91/100

Cindy Curtin 83/100

Taylor Couchman 73/100

I am very proud of all the students that competed in both the state shoot and the KCTA this past weekend. They represented their district and their sport very well!

Don't forget that we are raffling off a 20 gauge shotgun to raise money for the team. Tickets are available through Coach Palmer or the team. There is a flier available here. If anyone out there wants to purchase tickets please have them contact me and I would be happy to bring them to you. I would like to extend a word of thanks to Harvey Seely of Harvey's Barber Shop in downtown Liberty. Harvey is selling tickets for the team in his shop in downtown Liberty at 6 W. Kansas. 816-781-2039. I am looking for others to help sell tickets, if you may be interested please let me know.

Way to go guys!!!

For anyone interested Trap and Skeet are Olympic sports. Olympic Trap is different form of the sport then the version the students have been participating in this past year. NBC has done an outstanding job this year of digitizing the Olympic games and every sport is available for viewing on their website. If you are interested in checking out the sport and watching some outstanding athletes in action follow the links below. The Men's Double Trap Final and Trap Final is available but I cannot find the link to it.
